Overview Of Our Club
Some Members of our Club have been involved with RC boats in one form or another for over 30yrs.
The Club started in the late 70's with several members then belonging to the Northern Maritime Modelboat Assoc which is based at the Wattle Downs Ponds. This Club at the time catered for Yachts, Scale Warships, Tugs and Racing Boats. Merv also become Commodore of this Club for two years. Eventually the Scale boats moved to Panmure Basin and the powerboats formed a new Club sharing the ponds at Wattle Downs with the Yacht Club, using alternative Sundays. This new Club, The Manukau Model Power Boat Club became Incorporated in 1996 and in doing so become the only model powerboat Club in NZ to become Incorporated. Several years after the formation of the MMPBC, Merv was voted on as a Life Member.
MMPBC is one of the biggest Model Power Boat Clubs in NZ and is proud of its achievements and in 2006 sponsored five Members to race in Brisbane in the Trans Tasman Challenge. The following year we invited the Australians to NZ and hosted this event at Lake Hakanoa, Huntly.
The Club is always looking for and willing to help new Members so please feel free to make your way down to the ponds and make yourself known to our Club Captain.
We meet every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the Month.
Electric Boats
Until a few years ago there wasn't a lot around in the way of electric boats that would offer the same excitement as the nitro and petrol boats but thanks to brushless and LI-PO technology, there are now some very fast, ECO friendly options for RC boats.
Nitro and Petrol Boats
Nitro and petrol powered boats are a very popular type of boat to run, with the larger hulls that tend to be associated with these motors you can run in more diverse weather conditions, and the smell and noise satisfies the true petrolheads! They do have a noise restriction which can be observed in the racing rules on our forum.
New Classes!!!
Possible new Electric classes this year sound exciting for the future of fast electric radio control racing in NZ. With all the cheap brushless motors and LI-PO batteries around this should be a fun year!..
